A lot about advertising:  If the company advertises in the yellow pages, take a loot at their ad.  Does it convey what you want to know?  What’s the size of it?  What about TV & radio ads?  What’s said in them as well?

Ads can be confusing.  Some companies have little advertisement while others have a lot.  However, it’s the little business card that conveys the image.  A large yellow page ads says nothing really.  Maybe the company can afford it but what if that’s all they can afford?  A business card size ad in the phone book runs about $1200+ a year.  That’s $1200 that could be spent on professional equipment, new music, etc.  Size doesn’t really matter at all in our industry!

The same can be said for TV & radio ads.  That money could be spent be spent on enhancing their service to you.  The ad does nothing after you’ve seen it or heard it.  Conversely, it does give them reason to charge you higher rates. Why all the expensive advertising anyway unless you are new?  Generally, if a company has been around awhile, word of mouth is the best advertising.

We generally have enough inquiries to where we don’t need to advertise like that all the time.  We are not on TV, on the radio, or currently in the yellow pages.  The money we save is passed on to you, the client, through inexpensive packages & through updated equipment & music.  As well as the hiring & training for more DJs.

Business cards are the single most important piece of advertisement a company has.  It’s the one thing that every employee can hand out to friends, family, strangers, & acquaintances.  Take the time to lay out all the business cards (should they send you one) from the DJ companies you initially contact.  Ask for one if they didn't send you one.

Here is a tip: Look at the cards on the table & choose the ones you would consider hiring based solely on that.  This is your starting point.  Now call those companies back with the questions in this "FAQs" article.  Quality DJs will take pride in this little piece of cardboard.  They are not plain, yet they are not over descriptive.  The cards are simply attractive compared to others, which most of the time means their service is more attractive as well.

A little bit about “experience”:  If a DJ service says they have over “x” amount of years of experience, what does that really mean to you as a prospective client?

It’s a shame that so much emphasis is put on “experience” in our society rather than “talent”.  I, along with several other people, have had the chance to view many different DJ companies throughout the years.  Many of those claim to have a certain amount of years “experience” or have been “in the business for “x” amount of years”.  That’s OK to say, except for the problem that they weren’t very good DJ companies & basically ruined the reception for the newlyweds.

Talent & professionalism on the other hand is very important to hiring a DJ service.  A DJ can be in business for only months & be great at what she/he does.  This is because she/he is a professional & is talented.  If you choose a DJ based on “x” years in the business, you will have many years of memories for sure.  Would you rather have those memories be good ones or terrible ones?  Remember, 25 years of service could mean the company has had 20 DJs with only 1 year & 3 months of actually DJing.  Trust your gut when you read promotional material, emails, and talk with any DJ.

For the record, we have 10 years of experience that has made us talented and professional and highly recommended by several past clients.
